My Envelope Clutch

Usually, I procrastinate and procrastinate until the last possible minute, but not this time. I’m done with my envelope clutch a full two days ahead of the deadline!

I’m really happy with the way it turned out and I think using an embroidered pillow sham may have been one of my best ideas yet. The tutorial and pattern that Kate designed is very quick and easy to follow. There’s no reason you can’t make one every time you have a special night out planned so it coordinates with your outfit.

I even added a little pocket for an I.D. and credit card, so that I don’t have to worry about bulking up the clutch with a wallet. There’s one sewist in the Flickr pool that added a strap, which would be another great addition.

I hope everyone gives this clutch a try, and if you do, I’d love to hear how yours came out. Thanks to Kate at See Kate Sew for the tutorial and for hosting a fun clutch-along!

UPDATE: My clutch was featured at See Kate Sew! Thanks, Kate :-)

  1. I clicked on the your photo originally because I loved that beautiful fabric. I can’t believe it was a pillow sham. I am going to have to look around for something similar because I think I fell in love with it!
I made one out of scrap fabric left over from a dress and I think it will make a nice bag for date night, if I ever have a date night. I also ordered a red burlap fabric so I can make one for every day use.

When I found the pillow sham at Ross, I looked very thoroughly for another that may be hiding behind some other stuff (you know how messy Ross can be), but this was the only one. Anytime I’m there shopping for stuff, I always double check for more of these, just in case. I’ve had several plans for it, but I’m glad I never got around to using it on something else. I really like how it came out and I think it will look fantastic this spring and summer.

I’d love to see the one you made from a dress. That’s such a great idea – way to upcycle! Making an everyday one makes sense, too. I’ll add to my list of sewing projects :-)

I’m so in love with the fabric you’ve used, it’s beautiful! Great idea to include the little pocket for a credit card.
