My Super Online Sewing Bee Audition

Earlier this week, Sew Mama Sew announced their Great-British-Sewing-Bee-inspired sewing contest, the Super Online Sewing Bee. Even before I read that the grand prize is a Janome Horizon Memory Craft 8900, I knew I would have to enter. Without further ado, here’s my audition.

This skirt is my first attempt at designing and drafting a garment from scratch. It’s a pretty straight-forward gathered skirt, but I’ve added bias-cut, inset pockets for a little extra somethin’ somethin’.

Here you can see that I used french seams and self-binding to deal with all the raw edges. One of these days, I’ll just get a serger.

I made this dress for a Christmas party a few years ago. Unfortunately, it doesn’t fit these days, but I love it nonetheless.

Last year, I went through a bag phase. I got ahold of Amy Butler’s book, Style Stitches and just went nuts. The first bag is the Cosmo Bag and the second/third is the Reversible Everyday Shopper.

Finally, here are a few more Amy Butler designs – the Blossom Handbag and a set of five Origami Bags.

I really hope I make it in as a main contestant. If not, I plan on competing in the community contest. Either way, I can’t wait to follow along and see all the creativity. What do you think? Are you planning on competing in the main contest or the community contest? Have you competed in an online sewing contest before?

I like the bags, but I live the skirt and dress. The skirt is definitely my favorite. Good luck!

I’m really happy with the way the skirt turned out, although at about 3am Saturday morning when I was finishing the hem and buttons, I hated it with a passion ;-)

I saw your drawstring bag video on You Tube. Thank you for it. I always wanted to know how to make the corners. I like to make quilts. My best designs are the ones I make up while sitting at my sewing machine. I found an old Singer Featherweight pink color machine one night coming home. Somebody threw it away! Can you imagine? It’s missing a 2 parts but I can get them. I love reading your blog. Thanks.
