Journal Cover Sew-Along Wrap-Up

Could I be any more thrilled with how my first sew-along turned out? I think not! I mean, just look at these awesome covers that some truly lovely ladies came up with and added to the Flickr pool

Dana from A Look Into the Kroh’s Nest was the first one to post a journal cover in the Flickr pool and she set a high standard with this adorable bird! Now, she can tell a little birdie something ;-)

Celine at Espritpatch had the brilliant idea of adapting the journal cover to fit a photo album and then, as if that wasn’t awesome enough, she went and put a fun “Raggedy Heart” quilt blocks on hers.

Cara at Miss Cara Crafts made a travel journal for her trip to Bali with an adorable appliqué suitcase complete with a travel stamp. Have fun and be safe, Cara, I’ll try not to be too jealous!

Karin at Leigh Laurel Studios wanted to make a journal for each of her two little ones so she could keep a record of all the silly things they say. So each journal will reflect their personality – inside and out :-)

Marni at Haberdashery Fun made this cute journal cover for a writer friend of hers. With this quirky cover, Marni is saying hello to a friend she doesn’t get to see as often as she likes. When I first saw her cover, I was thinking this was a very friendly journal/confidante who’s just itching to receive your secrets and innermost thoughts. Either way, it’s too cute!

Zoe from Esty Addict turned the pen loop into a tab with a snap that keeps her journal cover closed. Zoe is pretty smart if you ask me. I like this fabric as it makes me think of my favorite book, Pride and Prejudice. I swear that’s Jane and Elizabeth (and maybe Kitty) dancing there on the cover.

Josie at Sew for Soul wins the prize for most covers in the Flickr pool (3), but this one takes the cake. It’s an appliqué portrait of a real-life couple. Seriously?!?!

And last, but not least, is my little sister, Charity. She doesn’t blog, but she has been known to contribute to Darling Adventures. She and her husband are currently living in New Zealand, so she was inspired to put a kiwi on her cover. Oh, by the way, she satin stitched the kiwi BY HAND! She always was the overachiever in the family (no, seriously, she’s a doctor and world-traveler and she’s saving the planet, one upcycled project at a time).

This sew-along has been so much fun to host. I’ve made some great new bloggy-friends and seeing my journal cover interpreted in so many creative ways is a really cool experience. Special thanks to Erica, Elena, and Caila for being my special guests and thanks to all of you wonderful ladies that joined in and sewed along!

And for anyone who missed the official sew-along, I would be very happy to see any covers you make, so keep adding them to the Flickr pool. Thanks!

  2. Charity Styles says:

Thanks for the project. The more I made, the better they turned out!

  3. Erica says:

Thanks for hosting. I had a blast. It’s so fun to see how everyone can do the same project and they all come out looking so unique! :)

  4. Dana says:

YAY! Thanks for featuring my bird cover. This was so much fun, I hope that there are more sew alongs. :)

  5. Danielle says:

These are absolutely adorable! I’m just catching the tail end, but I’m going to have to go back over the other posts and create my own :)

  6. Thanks for hosting! Your video tutorial was awesome.. it made the Sew A Long easy AND alot of fun. I look forward to making many more covers :)

  7. Zoe says:

Thanks for hosting the sewalong! I thought I might not be able to participate, as I couldn’t find composition books anywhere in New Zealand, in the end I had to cut another book down to the correct size!

    • Charity Styles says:

Zoe, I live in New Zealand too. The first one I tried to make to fit the standard notebooks that come with plain or ruled or graph paper. I has to cut it down to fit too, but then I upped my measurement by 1/4 inch and it fit perfectly the second time. Small world!

  8. Cara says:

Thanks for posting my cover :) I had a great time in Bali and luckily I did manage to find a Bali patch to iron onto the back. This sew along was just what I needed to make me want to get sewing :)

  9. Wendy says:

Linked from Love all the inspiration! I’m going to give this a try for a graduation gift!

  10. Hey Ginny, I just gave my journal cover to my friend and it was a HIT!! I have more requests as a result – great idea and GREAT 1st Sew A long… Congrats!
